On the UN World Oceans Day, during a seminar on Mapping Ocean Wealth and Marine Spatial Planning hosted by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Commission, Dr Martha Cecilia Prada illustrates achievements and lessons learned in applying the PROGES methods and tools for Ecosystem Based Management in the framework of the Biodiversity for Sustainable Development in the Caribbean through Ecosystem Based Management (EBM-DSS), a project executed under UN Environment Caribbean Environment Programme, Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW) and funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.

Key focus of Dr Prada’s illustration:

  • Activities and results of the Ecosystem Based Management Decision Support System (EBM-DSS) pilot executed in the Dominican Republic.
  • Lessons learned and those which needs further attention.
  • Challenges and opportunities for methodological enhancements from the need to adapt to the Covid-19 restrictions.
  • Uptake of the EBM-DSS pilots in the Caribbean and the opportunity for comparing experiences and exchanging lessons learned with similar initiatives being implemented in four Mediterranean areas by the ENI CBC MED - MED4EBM project.
  • Takeaways for further implementation and spreading of EBM-DSS.
