Focus: Parks and protected areas require sound ecology management capable to monitor and make informed management decisions. Availability and dynamics of vegetation determine accessibility of fodder for grazing animals, amount of fuel for carrying fires and influence soil erosion and soil reduction. Availability of fodder and water can healthily sustain a varied number of species and biodiversity. Fire is a key ecological process and a major disturbance comparable to herbivore activity. Fires have been occurring in African savannas for thousands of years, shaping the landscape, selecting for fire resistant/tolerant flora and fauna, and determining the structure, function and dynamics of the system. Appropriate use of fire in savannas is an important issue for managing savannas ecosystems and has been used as a management tool by conservation agencies to achieve their biodiversity mandate.

Focus: The goal of the project is to develop capacities for improving information management systems and testing the application of a new decision-support tool. An innovative methodology for integrated analysis of environmental and socioeconomic issues for selected marine ecosystems was applied. It used a participatory and multi-disciplinary approach in two pilot sites - Puerto Plata and Montecristi.

Partnership: United Nations Environment Programme, Caribbean Environmental Programme (UNEP-CEP). Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, Republica Dominicana (MinMARENA), Caribbean Marine Protected Areas Management Network (CaMPAM). ReefCheck Dominican Republic. Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES). Caribbean Netherlands Science Institute (CNSI). PROGES. Funding: Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development.

Duration: 2015 - 2020. Budget: 1.350.000,00 Euro (PROGES budget: 205.084,90 Euro).

Focus: Establishment of a PROGES-ISP application for defining and monitoring the key parameters which govern the evolution of the energy demand and supply dynamics, in the framework of the available set of local (renewable) and imported (petroleum) resources. This information is then used by the Samoan Renewable Energy Unit (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) to plan for and monitor its ground actions toward the achievement of the Samoa renewable energy objectives.

Partnership: IUCN - The World conservation Union, Oceania Regional Office. Samoan Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Renewable Energy Unit. PROGES. Funding: Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.

Duration: 2017 - 2018. Budget: 53.054,61 Euro (PROGES budget: 53.054,61 Euro).

Target area: Samoa

Focus: Development of two decision support systems for the management of the Buna River Protected Landscape and Shebenik Jablanice National Park. Analysis of ecological, economic and social management dynamics of the two protected areas. Organization and execution of 8 stakeholder involvement workshops. Definition of management indicators and related datasets. Technical support to local and international staff for the collection of data and the implementation of GIS and tabular databases. Implementation of dynamic and inter-linked visualizations (GIS map, numerical tables and charts) for the analysis of the above-mentioned indicators (using the software PROGES suite Integrated Spatial Planning developed by PROGES). Drafting of management plans for two protected areas. Training of local staff.

Focus: In the Southern African region significant wildlife and other natural resources are frequently situated on either side of one or more international boundaries. At the same time, communities living within these border areas have tended to be remote from national centres and thus marginalized by national development processes. The problem analysis of the area benefitted from a DSS application providing an integrated ecosystem approach and resulting in the development of a holistic answer to the challenges of development in the transfrontier area.

Partnership: Funding: Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development

Duration: 2009 - 2014. Budget: 5.566.988,00 Euro (PROGES budget: 249.262,00 Euro).

Target area: Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTP): Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
